Seminar Report
Shotokan Karate-do with Sensei Michael Adams
On Wednesday 12th September all the juniors at the Tokon Academy had the chance to train with one of the areas most successful and up and coming young Karate instructors. Sensei Michael Adams of the Zanshin Black Belt Academy in Cambridge held two sessions for the juniors at the Tokon headquarters in Sandy.
At only 17 years of age Michael has already won countless awards and titles through his relatively short Karate career and is now an instructor in his own right.
Starting training in Shotokan Karate at age 8, under his instructor Sensei Linden Huckle, 4th Dan- back then he stood around four and a half feet tall now Michael stands well over 6 feet and commands great presence in the dojo.
The original reason behind having Michael into the Tokon Academy to teach our juniors was for all to see what can be achieved if hard work and perseverance is put into training. Michael is quite literally only a couple of years older than our oldest junior so this opportunity gave all attending a great chance to look up to someone that was in their shoes only a few years ago!
Michael's command of the class was first-rate through both hours, he took time to explain the principles of hip rotation and body mechanics in both sessions and related easily to the youngest beginner right the way up the the eldest 4th Kyu's in attendance.
Michael's highest placing in competitive Karate was 4th place in the Kata event at 2003's world championships held in Sweden and it is obvious to all that attended the seminars and watched from the sidelines that his attitude to training and confidence to teaching is something that all the Tokon Academy juniors should attempt to emulate if they want the same successes.
