Kids Teamwork

Like any organisation cohesion and unity play a huge role in development and expansion at the Tokon Academy.

Teamwork and cooperation are two further traits that instructors at the Tokon Academy attempt to develop in our junior members, not only do these two components provide great building blocks for later life but they also encourage great competition and a healthy rivalry between children and paradoxically unity and comoradery across classes.

In an attempt to develop both teamwork and leadership qualities all junior members are split into three teams and at each respective school a team/dojo captain is designated charge of all children that fall into their respective team. The names of the three teams have no relative meaning to our classes other than they are the same names of three major towns on the island of Okinawa (widely accepted as the birth place of traditional Karate-do):

Throughout the year our martial arts classes provide ample opportunity for teams to experience healthy competition. Points are collated for successful grading examinations, merit badge results, student of the month awards etc. and count towards the team award at the end of year presentation evening.

For example:
A students successful grading examination pass = 1 point for team
Student becoming 'Student of the month' = 1 point for team
'Pass' at merit badge examination = 1 point for team
'Merit' at merit badge examination = 2 points for team
'Distinction' at merit badge examination = 3 points for team
A student finishing first in a competition = 3 points; second = 2 points and third = 1 point
